Throwing Classes
Foundational Throwing
Unleash your inner artist and learn the art of pottery throwing! This 8-week foundational course will guide you through the basics of wheel throwing, from centering clay to shaping mugs, bowls, and vases. In a supportive and hands-on environment, you'll work on building skills to transform a lump of clay into beautiful functional pottery. Sign up today and discover the satisfaction of creating with clay!
Who this class is for:
No experience required!
This beginner’s class is for everyone of all levels, but mostly for those with little experience on the wheel. If you have never been on a wheel, or took classes before but are still learning how to center, if you need practice pulling a cylinder, or are working on basic forms such as a mug, bowl or vase - this class is for you.
Skill Focused Throwing
In this series we are picking a single skill and focusing on it for a month. Each month a different skill is focused on. It might be lids, throwing larger, altering forms, making plates, tricky trimming, or something else. The exact skill will vary month to month.
Who this class is for:
This skill focused class is for people who already know how to throw on the wheel. Students should be able to successfully center 1 to 2 pounds of clay minimum, pull a cylinder, and make basic forms such as a mug, bowl or vase. Foundational skills will not be covered in these classes. Some classes may naturally require more skills or being able to center and throw higher amounts of clay.
Throwing Class Structure:
Unless otherwise stated, classes take place once a week on the same day and time. Longer throwing classes include a skipped week to allow for any final pieces to be fired before glazing.
Setup and cleanup should happen during class time. Please respect the instructor’s time by arriving no more than 5 minutes early to class.
Please bring:
1) Personal set of throwing tools. Beginner’s basic tool sets include; wire cutter, wooden rib with a 90 degree angle, pin tool, small sponge, wooden knife, pear trimming tool, small trimming tool with triangle end and small loop. Metal rib optional. You can purchse these tools directly from Clay Art Center in Tacoma. A quality set, such as Kemper’s 8 piece beginner’s set, is a great place to start. Be warned, I have seen knockoffs marketed at Kemper online. Cheaper tool sets will not last.
Note: We don’t provide any tools for potters because they are a highly personal choice, and we all develop our favorites. Making these decisions is part of growing your own voice as a potter. Maintaining tools for each class would also raise the prices for everyone.
2) Apron optional. A bath towel across the lap is also a common choice.
3) Plastic might be needed to cover work. Most foundational classes group their work together.
4) Additional bags of clay may be purchased as needed at the studio. We intentionally limit the amount of clay provided, so you are only paying for what you need. This helps to keep the prices low!

No, you don’t have to take a class to join! Practice is what every potter needs. Learn how to throw on your own time by becoming a member first.
